When it comes to colon cancer, early detection can be the difference between a simple procedure and a challenging, life-changing diagnosis. That’s why a colonoscopy, the gold standard for colon cancer detection, is so important.

Abdallah A. Abdallah, MD, an AdventHealth gastroenterologist in Riverview, shares why a colonoscopy is the best way to spot colorectal cancer early or prevent it from occurring in the first place, and how getting one can truly save your life.

Why Early Detection Matters

“Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States, but it often begins quietly, with small growths called polyps forming in the colon,” explains Dr. Abdallah. “These polyps may not cause symptoms right away, but can sometimes develop into cancer over time. By the time any symptoms appear — like changes in bowel habits, fatigue or unexplained weight loss — the disease may already be advanced.”

A colonoscopy allows your health care provider to find and remove these polyps before they become cancerous. “It’s one of the most powerful and effective tools we have to detect and prevent colorectal cancer, and it’s one preventive screening you should never skip,” Dr. Abdallah explains.

Who Should Get Screened

In recent years, there’s been a consistent upward trend of colorectal cancer occurring at a younger age. “45 is the new 50 when it comes to colorectal cancer screenings, and most people should begin screening by that age,” Dr. Abdallah shares.

If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors, your provider may recommend starting even earlier. If your initial colonoscopy results are normal and you have no additional factors that make you high risk, you will typically only need to repeat screenings once every 10 years. Your health care provider will help determine your risk factors and the right schedule for you.
