Bidirectional Glenn Procedure

A bidirectional Glenn procedure is mainly used in the treatment of young patients with congenital heart defects that reduce the amount of oxygenated blood circulating through the body. It is performed as a staging operation to prepare your child for the eventual Fontan procedure normally performed at a later time. Your pediatric surgeons will create a connection from the superior vena cava to the pulmonary artery, improving the amount of oxygenated blood circulating through the body. After the bidirectional Glenn procedure is complete, your child will need to remain in the hospital for three to seven days.
