Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is simply a way for your physician to get an accurate, “big picture” reading of your blood pressure from one day to the next. It is accomplished using a small device that can be worn on a belt along with a blood pressure cuff that is worn under the shirt sleeve. The device automatically takes a blood pressure reading every 15-30 minutes throughout the day and night, and records it for your doctor’s evaluation. Understanding that, for many patients, just thinking about a trip to the doctor’s office can cause a rise in blood pressure, this constant ambulatory form of monitoring may provide a more accurate picture that helps a doctor to determine whether the patient needs to be treated for hypertension (high blood pressure).
