Shawnee Mission Health (SMH), part of the Adventist Health System, is growing again with the opening of its newest campus at Bluhawk in Overland Park, Kan. SMH Overland Park will meet the needs of patients in growing southeastern Johnson County, officially opening to the public Feb. 1, 2017.
The first phase of the $40 million development includes a 26,000-square-foot emergency department (ED), lab and imaging center. The 24/7 ED features seven exam rooms with private or Jack and Jill bathrooms, two triage rooms and two major medical rooms, and is staffed by the same ED physicians who staff the ED's at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Merriam and SMH Prairie Star in Lenexa. The imaging center includes MRI, ultrasound, X-ray, fluoroscopy and CT scans, and imaging and laboratory services are available for outpatients and emergency patients.
In addition, a 75,000-square-foot medical office building will open in early spring and offer patients care from physicians in a variety of specialties, including women's imaging services, primary care and physical therapy. The ED, lab and imaging center will initially create 50 new jobs and additional employees will be added once the medical office building opens.
"Our goal for this campus is to provide high-quality health care for residents in southeastern Johnson County. As the only five-star hospital in the Kansas City metro area, we look forward to making the quality services we offer at Shawnee Mission Medical Center even more convenient by bringing them closer to people who live and work in this area," said SMH President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Bacon.
SMH partnered with general contractor GE Johnson; Henderson Engineers, Inc.; ACI Boland Architects; architects with HKS, Inc.; and engineers with Olsson Associates and Bob D. Campbell and Co., Inc. on the first phase of the project, which took 16 months to complete.
Most rooms in the ED feature windows to let in natural light, and the space is designed with open sight lines from the front entrance to exit for safety and care coordination. Local artists and photographers are featured throughout the ED and imaging center, with a rotating exhibit from ArtsKC highlighted in the main lobby.
"Every aspect of our campus is designed to deliver on the Adventist Health System mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ," said Administrative Director for SMH - Overland Park Derek Ortner. "Our goal is that all who visit our campus will come to appreciate our dedication to providing much more than medicine."
The new facility is located in the Bluhawk development at 7820 W 165th Street (east of Antioch and 165th Street) Overland Park, Kan., 66223.
