At AdventHealth Rollins Brook, a new chapter in patient care has begun with the acquisition of a state-of-the-art 3D mammogram machine. This is the only 3D mammogram unit in the local community of Lampasas, making it a crucial addition for early cancer detection in this rural area. Without this technology, patients would need to drive to Killeen or Marble Falls, highlighting its importance for the community.
At the heart of this advancement is Barbara Hardeman, affectionately known as Bobby, who has been the dedicated mammography technologist at Rollins Brook for over 40 years. Her journey in mammography is a lifelong passion, and she has witnessed numerous advancements in technology. "The new 3D digital machine is amazing and is definitely a life saver. It affords my patients a much better ability to find breast cancer early versus a 2D mammogram machine," explains Hardeman.
To celebrate, AdventHealth Rollins Brook invites community members to an open house, ribbon cutting, and exclusive tour on Monday, February 17, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm. As the hospital celebrates 90 years of service, AdventHealth Central Texas CEO Kevin Roberts and Rollins Brook Hospital Administrator Ashley Underwood will update guests on future plans, including new services.
The new 3D Mammography System, along with recent kitchen renovations, was made possible by generous donations managed by the AdventHealth Central Texas Foundation, including contributions from the Charlie and Elsiedean Boyd Estate, the Tracy Guthrie Charitable Trust, the Texas Department of Agriculture, and numerous local donors.
Crystal Clawson, the Women's Imaging Supervisor, adds, "3D mammography can offer an increased cancer detection rate, especially for women with dense breast tissue. This type of technology has not been offered in the Lampasas community before, so patients will now benefit from the early detection the unit can provide to save lives."
The new unit was installed in late 2024 and is now fully functional. For patients scheduled to use the new 3D mammogram machine, the preparation instructions remain the same as for a typical 2D mammogram. This advanced technology not only increases cancer detection rates but also reduces unnecessary callbacks and false positives.
With this state-of-the-art equipment, AdventHealth Rollins Brook continues its legacy of excellence, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care and early detection. Bobby and the team at Rollins Brook are excited to welcome the community to come in and schedule a mammogram, providing compassionate care and the best possible outcomes for their patients.
