Hospital Hosts Luncheon, Discusses Rotator Cuff Tears

PALM COAST, Fla., November 3, 2017 On Oct. 25, nearly 100 community members joined Florida Hospital Flagler for a physician-led seminar about managing rotator cuff tears.

Over lunch at Halifax Plantation Golf Club in Ormond Beach, Florida Hospital Flagler orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Gay explained the diagnosis and treatment options for rotator cuff tears, including physical therapy and surgery.

Rotator cuff tears are one of the most common conditions I see in my practice. Its so common, in fact, that by age of 60, over 50 percent of people have a tear, and by age 80, about 75 percent of people have tear. However, not all need surgery, he said during the event.

There are a multitude of reasons why the rotator cuff tears, Gay explained.

Some are caused by a traumatic injury, but most are degenerative tears, meaning tears that result from time and aging, he said. Rotator cuff tears do not heal on their own and they can get larger over time, so it is important to see your doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms.

Florida Hospital Flagler is one of only four Joint Commission-certified Total Shoulder Replacement Centers of Excellence in the state.
