Eric Turner, MD, has been named Gordon Hospitals latest SonShine Award recipient. This award was established by Gordon Hospital in 2017 to honor the hard work and dedication of its employees. Quarterly awards provide opportunities for employees, patients, and visitors to recognize and reward employees and teams for exceptional accomplishments and demonstrated behaviors that are aligned to the mission, vision, and values of Gordon Hospital.
The name SonShine was developed by Gordon Hospital employees. The recipients of the SonShine award shine for the Son of God through their warm and comforting care they provide to patients and their fellow employees.
Dr. Turner, who is a medical oncologist at North Georgia Cancer Care, received a nomination from one of his patients who said the following: In 2011, I was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma, and I was referred to Dr. Turner. After my appointment with him, he immediately sent me to Gordon Hospital where I was admitted. The next day, I was transferred to Northside Hospital in Atlanta because he had never treated my type of cancer before and I was very sick. I spent two weeks there and then they let me come home, but they expected me to return twice a week for chemo. I had no one who could take me or pick me up. This was a big problem, so I went to Dr. Turner and asked if he would call Northside Hospital to talk to my doctor to get instruction on how to care for me. He told me to let him think on it, and a couple of hours later my phone rang. God answered my prayers because Dr. Turner said he would admit me to Gordon Hospital and for the next six months I received great care, chemo, religious help, education about my cancer, and became very close with Dr. Turner. I thank him and the PCU nurses for saving my life. He chose to go the extra mile to help me and without that, I might not be here today. I owe him a heap of gratitude along with Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
