DELAND, Fla., June 23, 2017 On June 15, nearly 120 community members joined Florida Hospital DeLand and Florida Hospital Fish Memorial for a free community seminar at Victoria Gardens Clubhouse in DeLand.
Over a healthy lunch, neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Murphy discussed neurologic issues, including headaches, neck and back pain, pinched nerves, numbness of the limbs, vertigo and more.
As a neurosurgeon, Murphy surgically treats disorders of the brain, spinal cord, spine, and nerves.
Structural disease of the spine can be very debilitating and have a variety of causes, he explained to the afternoon crowd.
Bone spurs can cause pinched nerves or put pressure on the spinal cord. A compression fracture of vertebra which are the supporting bones of the spine can be caused by osteoporosis or a fall. In addition, spinal stenosis is largely a degenerative condition in which overgrowth of bone and ligaments in the spine can cause pressure on nerves or the spinal cord, he said. Other structure disease of the spine could be caused by a tumor or an infection, such as Meningitis.
Throughout the seminar, Murphy emphasized that surgery is the last resort for patients.
About 85 percent of the cases I see do not start or end with surgery there are other treatment methods to consider, such as physical therapy, chiropractic care, and medications, he said.
We are honored to provide a neurosurgery services and meet the neurosurgical needs of West Volusia residents, said Maryann Fields, neuroscience administrator for the Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties. We were delighted Dr. Murphy presented to an audience of 120 community residents and we look forward to future educational opportunities.
