DELAND, Fla., June 5, 2019 – On May 31, the AdventHealth DeLand Foundation, with help of AdventHealth DeLand volunteers and Leadership West Volusia Class of 2019, hosted an end-of-the-school-year party for the kids attending the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties - Lacey Family/Spring Hill Unit in DeLand.
Nearly 50 children ages 6 to 15, enjoyed a beach-themed party to embrace the summer and celebrate the end of the 2018-2019 school year. The festivities included a water-balloon station, waterslide, tug-of-war, face-painting, music and healthy food. Each child also received a beach bag full of goodies to help keep them safe in the summer, including sunscreen, water safety information, a visor, sunglasses and lip balm.
“AdventHealth DeLand recognizes that student development does not begin and end with the school year,” said Lorenzo Brown, AdventHealth DeLand CEO. “As part of our mission of extending the healing hands of Christ, we are proud to share in celebrations at the Lacey Family/Spring Hill Boys and Girls Club, where students can rejoice in their accomplishments and be inspired to achieve success. This is the epitome of ‘Feeling Whole,’ and we are proud to be a part of caring for our community—in mind, body and spirit.”
This event was part of The Banquet Table program, a collaborative initiative that began two years ago between AdventHealth DeLand and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties - Lacey Family/Spring Hill Unit, one of eight Boys & Girls Clubs within the area.
During the school year, AdventHealth DeLand provides weekend meals for the kids every Friday. During the summer, the local hospital supports the Summer Food Pantry to ensure kids have a place to get food even when school isn’t in session. In addition, staff from the hospital visit the Club on Friday afternoons to share information about health and wellbeing, as well as engage with the youth in activities.
In August, AdventHealth DeLand plans to host another party for the kids, but this time to celebrate the start of a new school year.
