PORT ORANGE, Fla. – Since returning to Florida after seven years in the southwestern United States, board-certified colon and rectal surgeon Dr. Matthew Wilson has enjoyed many adventures, including deep sea fishing, exploring the community and visiting the beach.
As a new member of AdventHealth Medical Group, Wilson is now part of a team of over 400 health care providers, including 250 primary care physicians and specialists in Flagler, Lake and Volusia counties.
Wilson joined the practice of colorectal surgeons, Dr. Timothy Tolland and Dr. Andrew Ritter, who have cared for Volusia County residents for more than 35 years. Their practice recently became part of AdventHealth’s nationally recognized colorectal surgical care team, which added two Volusia County clinics to the network.
To further support the growing region, an additional colorectal surgeon is anticipated to also join the clinic later this year, increasing the community’s access to AdventHealth’s highly specialized whole-person care.
“This has been a defining year for myself and my family,” said Wilson. “I decided a change in work-life balance was needed and I wanted to be in a place where I can care for my patients and also enjoy a coastal community with my family. Daytona Beach and AdventHealth provided both of those opportunities.”
Wilson enjoys an active lifestyle, with a passion for exercise and sports, including scuba diving, skiing, and coaching his children’s soccer teams.
He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Tulane University and completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. He then practiced general surgery for the U.S. Navy until 2015.
During his time on active duty, he was honored with the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal as well as two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals. Upon discharge, he completed a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at AdventHealth Orlando.
He then relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, performing colon and rectal surgery for seven years at Utica Park Clinic and Hillcrest Medical Center.
During this time, he was also an assistant professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and an adjunct professor of surgery at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa.
Experienced in minimally invasive colon surgery using both standard laparoscopic methods as well as the da Vinci robotic system, Wilson will perform procedures using AdventHealth Daytona Beach's da Vinci XI surgery system, a versatile and flexible robotic system.
“I have done hundreds of laparoscopic colectomy cases and nearly 300 robotic procedures,” Wilson said. “Performing procedures with smaller incisions often gives patients a better experience with less pain and faster recoveries.”
Wilson will care for patients at clinics located at 400 Clyde Morris Blvd., Ste. A in Ormond Beach and 1185 Dunlawton Ave., Ste. 100-A in Port Orange. His office phone number is
Call386-231-6500.
