About Oropharyngeal Cancer
A type of head and neck cancer, oropharyngeal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the oropharynx, the middle part of the pharynx (throat) behind the mouth. It includes the back part of the tongue, the soft palate, the side and back walls of the throat and the tonsils.
The pharynx is a small, hollow tube that starts behind the nose and ends where the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (tube from the throat to the stomach) begin. Air and food pass through the pharynx on the way to the trachea or the esophagus.
Sometimes, more than one cancer can occur simultaneously in the oropharynx and other parts of the oral cavity, nose, throat, larynx (vocal cords), trachea or esophagus.
