About Anal Cancer
Anal cancer is a disease where malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues that surround the anus. This type of cancer forms when normal cells die and rapidly mutate into abnormal cells. Most anal cancer diagnoses are related to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The anus is composed of a canal and two sphincter muscles with an opening at the end of the large intestine. The sphincter muscles have a ring-like structure, allowing them to remain closed until your nerves and muscles surrounding your anus tell you it’s time to excrete food waste. These muscles also remain closed to help prevent infections.
Now that we have a clearer picture of the anatomy and a better understanding of anal cancer, let’s explore common symptoms and risk factors to look out for.
- Symptoms
-
One of the most common signs of anal cancer is bleeding in or around the anus and rectum. However, this may also be caused by hemorrhoids — talk with your doctor to get to the root of your condition. Other symptoms of anal cancer include:
- A lump or mass near the anus
- Abnormal discharge from the anus
- Feeling a constant need to poop
- Bowel incontinence
- Itching in or around the anus or rectum
- Noticeable changes in bowel movements
- Pain in or near the anus
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately for the care you deserve.
- Risk Factors
-
When it comes to anal cancer, the biggest risk factor is exposure to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which is passed through sexual contact. Other risk factors include:
- Age
- Anal warts
- A weakened immune system
- Having had other cancers, like cervical, vulvar or vaginal cancer
- Increased number of sexual partners
- Smoking
