Understanding Cancer Surgery
When surgery is needed for cancer treatment, our multidisciplinary team of oncology physicians works to develop a patient-specific approach to treating each diagnosis. While surgery is the oldest form of cancer treatment, our oncology surgeons are continuously pioneering and adopting new advances and technology to remove your cancer more safely and effectively.
-
Curative Surgery
This surgery involves the complete removal of a cancerous tumor, which works best on localized cancers that haven't yet spread to other parts of the body.
-
Diagnostic Surgery (Biopsy)
Biopsies are performed to remove some or all of a tumor for examination to determine if the growth is cancerous.
-
Palliative Surgery
This surgery is not a cancer treatment or cure, but it is used to ease pain, disability or other complications that come with advanced cancer.
-
Preventive Surgery
Preventive procedures keep cancer from developing, for instance, by removing precancerous polyps before they become malignant.
-
Reconstructive Surgery
Reconstructive procedures, like a mastectomy, return the body to normal or near-normal appearance or function following cancer treatment.
-
Staging Surgery
This surgery is used to determine the extent of the cancer and can sometimes be done without an incision by using tiny cameras (scopes) attached to a flexible tube, which are inserted into natural body openings.

Immunotherapy
This latest strategy for destroying cancer trains your immune system to find and eliminate cancer cells. Immunotherapy drugs may help make your surgery even more successful.
Chemotherapy
Using a combination of specialized drugs, chemotherapy has the power to destroy or slow down the growth of cancer cells in every part of your body. Depending on your diagnosis, it may play an essential role in successfully treating your cancer.
Radiation
While radiation therapy is one of the most common treatments for cancer, we do it with uncommon expertise, guidance and compassion. Using the same energy as X-rays, radiation therapy targets specific areas of the body, shrinking tumors and eliminating cancer cells by damaging their DNA.
Integrative Medicine
Integrative medicine takes a holistic approach to your overall health, often working hand-in-hand with traditional medicine to treat not just your body but your spirit. Our naturopathic doctor will work alongside your care team to recommend additional therapies to support your current treatment plan, address side effects and help you regain strength and stamina.
