Two ultrasound techs looking at monitor

Real-Time Imaging, Real-Time Insights

Ultrasound scans give your doctor a way to see images of the inside of your body. And because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show your organs' structure and movement, as well as blood flowing through your blood vessels, which helps diagnose and treat various medical conditions.

Traditional ultrasound scans display images in thin, flat sections of the body. Advanced ultrasounds include three-dimensional (3D) ultrasounds, which format the sound wave data into 3D images, and 4D ultrasounds, which show a 3D ultrasound in motion. If your health care provider has ordered an ultrasound, learn more about what to expect with this scan below. With hospitals and imaging centers in Tampa Bay, Polk County, Ocala or the Heartland, we have services near you.

What To Expect During Your Ultrasound

Before and During Your Ultrasound Exam

No special diet or preparation is required for ultrasound exams.

For most ultrasounds, you'll lay face-up on an exam table that can be tilted or adjusted.

The sonographer (ultrasound technologist) will apply a clear, water-based gel to the area of your body needing examination. This gel eliminates air pockets between the transducer and your skin that can block the sound waves from passing into your body.

The sonographer will press the transducer firmly against your skin, going over the area of interest or angling the sound beam from a farther location to better see an area of concern.

In some ultrasound scans, the transducer is attached to a probe and inserted into a natural opening in the body.

Types of ultrasound exams include:

  • Transrectal ultrasound: the transducer is inserted into the rectum to view the prostate
  • Transvaginal ultrasound: the transducer is inserted into the vagina to view the uterus and ovaries
After Your Exam

When the ultrasound exam is complete, you'll get dressed and may be asked to wait while the images are reviewed. Results from the procedure will be sent to your ordering physician within two business days. And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask our team. It’s important to us that you feel informed and confident.
