Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment Beyond CPAP
We know that most people use a CPAP machine to mitigate the risks of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but with tubing and masks, it can make sleep even more difficult. That’s why our Sleep Disorder Center at AdventHealth Porter offers a surgical option to treat OSA. To find out if this treatment is right for you, call us at 303-715-7270.
- Surgical Treatment
-
This new surgical treatment works as follows:
- A device is surgically placed under the skin through three small incisions during an outpatient procedure
- This device works inside the body to deliver mild stimulation to key airway muscles, allowing them to stay open during sleep
- The patient uses a small handheld remote to turn the device on during sleep and off when awake
- Benefits of Surgery
-
This innovative surgical treatment will benefit those who:
- Have been diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea
- Are unable to use or receive consistent benefits from CPAP
- Are not significantly overweight
- Are over age 18
This surgical treatment has been shown to reduce the severity of OSA significantly. Proper treatment may lead to an increase in the ability to perform daily tasks and a decrease in risks associated with untreated OSA, including:
- Accidents (like motor vehicle accidents)
- Hypertension
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Vascular disease
- Heart failure
- Early mortality
