Helping Keep Student-Athletes in the Game
Playing a sport does more than strengthen the body. It empowers student-athletes to build lasting relationships, learn life lessons and discover all they can accomplish with hard work and determination.
At AdventHealth Palm Coast, we know the importance of teens participating in sports safely. That's why we've partnered with Flagler Schools to provide licensed and certified athletic trainers to both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools, keeping student-athletes on the field and getting them safely back in the game after an injury, stronger than before.
Keeping Athletes Safe and Strong
The key to a successful high school sports career is understanding the fundamentals of the game. That’s true for athletic training, too. Together, we work with coaches, players and families in Flagler County high schools to make sure every athlete has what they need to safely participate in sports.
- What Is an Athletic Trainer?
-
Athletic trainers are certified health care professionals who help athletes maximize their physical performance to go for their goals on the field. Schools with athletic trainers have lower injury rates and a larger overall focus on the health and safety of student-athletes.
AdventHealth athletic trainers take a collaborative approach to working with student-athletes to prevent, manage and care for various sports-related injuries. Each athletic trainer is licensed to deliver care that includes:
- Concussion testing
- CPR
- On-site care at sporting events
- Small injury wraps and stabilization
- Wound care
On a day-to-day basis, our athletic trainers manage acute injuries and collaborate with the school’s sports medicine team to provide the most appropriate plan of care that allows the athlete to remain in their sport, in the safest way possible.
- Sports Physicals
-
Per FHSAA, all athletes are required to have a sports physical before their season begins. These pre-season physicals help medical professionals identify any increased risk of injury, such as abnormalities in muscle strength, limited joint range of motion, past medical history concerns and even cardiac issues that could present during physical activity.
Now, through our partnership with Flagler Schools, our providers will offer pre-season physicals right at your high school.
Talk to your teen’s athletic trainer to find out how you can take advantage of any upcoming clinics or schedule an appointment with an AdventHealth Palm Coast provider.

- Strong Hearts, Strong Athletes
-
It’s rare for high school athletes to experience a cardiac emergency during a game, but it’s important to be prepared for everything.
Our athletic trainers will provide AED/CPR training for appropriate personnel, as legislative requirements dictate that every athletic event must have someone who is certified in CPR and AED in attendance. Our athletic trainers and physicians are well trained and experienced in addressing emergencies that may occur during games or practices.
- Care for Concussions
-
Concussions remain a serious health threat to many student-athletes. You can be confident your athlete is in good hands with the AdventHealth Palm Coast athletic training program.
Each student-athlete will complete ImPACT testing before they participate in sports. This testing provides us with a baseline of cognitive function, including short-term memory and reaction time, to better identify a concussion if it occurs.
If a concussion is suspected, we have specific protocols and evaluations in place to identify if a concussion has occurred and when it’s safe to return to play.
- Treating and Preventing Injuries
-
When injuries do occur, our athletic trainers are available to immediately assess the injury and apply any first aid, if needed. You can also have peace of mind knowing you’re connected to some of the region’s best sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons and rehabilitation specialists to get your athlete back on the field.
Our athletic trainers can also provide basic services and therapies before and during practices and games, including wrapping, taping, icing, modifying workouts and more. Talk to your coach or athletic director to find out what services are available at your school.
