Approximately 1 million lives are changed each year by reconstructive surgical procedures. Of course, if you’ve never needed reconstructive surgery, it’s natural to have some questions about what to expect.

Our reconstructive surgery experts, James Mayo, MD, and Sabrina Pavri, MD, MBA, FACS, will walk you through everything you need to know if you or a loved one are considering reconstructive surgery.

Reconstructive Surgery vs. Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

“Reconstructive surgery is a type of plastic surgery that repairs parts of the body that have been damaged, typically by either cancer or trauma,” shares Dr. Pavri. “Our goal with every reconstructive procedure is to restore both form and function, to get our patients back to — or as close as possible to — their original state.” In addition to diseases like breast cancer and trauma, reconstructive surgery can also be a solution for certain congenital conditions, like cleft lip or palate. Because reconstructive surgery is a life-changing, medically necessary surgery, these types of procedures are covered by most insurance plans.

Though reconstructive surgery has similar underlying surgical principles to cosmetic surgery and both procedure types fall under the wing of plastic surgery, they serve very different purposes.

“Cosmetic surgery is an aesthetic surgical treatment to help a patient look or feel better and often addresses issues related to aging or weight loss,” explains Dr. Mayo. Unlike reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure not usually covered by most health insurance plans.

Benefits of Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery gives patients who’ve experienced life-altering trauma or illness a fresh start and makes a lifesaving difference. “The ultimate goal of reconstructive surgery is to help our patients feel whole again,” explains Dr. Mayo.

Examples of common lifesaving reconstructive procedures include:

  • Breast reconstruction after a lumpectomy or mastectomy
  • Cleft lip and palate repair
  • Limb-saving procedures when facing amputation
  • Reconstructive skin procedures following serious burns or skin cancer

No matter the procedure type, reconstructive surgeons are dedicated to helping their patients achieve their best quality of life. “The purpose of reconstructive surgery is to restore our patient’s form and function, so at the end of the day, they can go back to their normal lives and look in the mirror without the constant reminder of what they’ve been through,” says Dr. Pavri. “My patients tell me their reconstructive procedures were an extremely important factor in helping them feel whole again after going through cancer.”

Helpful Tips Before Considering Reconstructive Surgery

According to Dr. Pavri, the first step when considering reconstructive surgery is finding a qualified and skilled plastic surgeon. “Make sure you have your reconstructive surgery by a plastic surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery,” she adds.

Once you’ve decided on a surgeon, the next step to a successful reconstructive surgery is maintaining open communication. “Just as it’s crucial to find a physician who communicates openly with you each step of the way, it’s also important to make sure you ask questions, clarify your goals and are on the same page with your surgeon,” shares Dr. Mayo. Some important points to cover with your care team and health insurance company before surgery include:

  • Associated risks
  • Insurance coverage
  • Recovery and follow-up care, including weight restrictions
  • Whether it’s an inpatient or outpatient procedure

Asking questions is the best way to help you decide if a procedure is right for you.

“Whenever possible, we send our patients home with loved ones following their procedure. However, some of our bigger reconstructions do require hospital stays,” explains Dr. Mayo. Depending on your procedure type, your surgery may be done at a clinic, surgical center, a hospital or at your surgeon’s office. Your physician will work with you to create a care plan that best meets your unique needs.
