COVID-19 Vaccine for Ages 5+ FAQs
- Is it safe for my young child to receive the COVID-19 vaccine?
-
Yes, the vaccine is safe for children ages 5 to 18. The Pfizer dose for young children under 12 contains one-third the amount of active ingredient compared to the adult dosage. For best protection, children would receive their second dose 21 days or more after their initial shot.
- Why can my young child only get the Pfizer vaccine?
-
At this time the Food and Drug Administration has only recommended emergency use authorization of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine in children ages 5 to 11. Children in this age group will receive a lower dose of the vaccine to protect them well against symptomatic infection and potentially cause fewer side effects.
- What kind of side effects will my young child get from the vaccine?
-
About half of all people who receive the vaccine experience some side effects, but that’s actually a result of the immune response brought on by the vaccine, meaning it is working. Common side effects include fatigue, fever, headache and muscle pain. It’s important to note that your immune system can still successfully respond to the vaccine even if you don’t experience side effects.
- I heard young kids can develop heart problems from being vaccinated. Is my child at risk?
-
According to the Food and Drug Administration, there is a low risk of myocarditis cases in the 12 to 17 age group and the risk could be even lower for younger children who receive the vaccine. We encourage you to reach out to your child's pediatrician as he or she can talk through any questions you may have and provide a personalized recommendation.
COVID-19 PCR Testing for Travelers
If you’re getting ready to travel, we make it easy to get a COVID-19 PCR test with no doctor visit necessary and results available right in the AdventHealth app. For answers to more questions or to reach our team, call us at Call813-467-4700.
- When would I get a COVID-19 PCR test?
-
We offer COVID-19 PCR tests specifically for travel purposes. For example, if you’re traveling internationally and need a COVID-19 test before your flight, you may receive a PCR test from our team beforehand.
- Will my health insurance cover the cost of COVID-19 PCR testing?
-
It’s best to check with your insurance company, first. Because our PCR testing is elective and done for travel purposes (as opposed to ordered by a physician), insurance may or may not cover the cost of PCR testing.
- How will I get my COVID-19 PCR test results?
-
Your test results will be available to view in the AdventHealth app. You may also visit us in person 24 hours after your test if you need a paper copy of your results.
- How long does it take to get my results?
-
Typically, COVID-19 PCR test results will be completed by midnight on the same day of your test. Test results may be posted to the AdventHealth app within a few hours of test completion.
- Is there a specific number of tests available each day? Will tests run out?
-
Our team is well-equipped to meet our community’s PCR testing needs each day, and there are no concerns about appointment or test shortages currently.
