If you're considering weight-loss surgery, we're here to guide you on your health journey and promise to be with you every step of the way. We know how important it is to feel confident physically.
Certain lifestyle changes, like healthy eating and increased physical activity, should start before surgery. It turns out that even small changes to your eating habits will likely bring some weight loss before bariatric surgery — and can make a big difference in what happens in the long run.
Our board-certified bariatric and general surgeon, Naga Thatimatla, MD, FASMBS, FACS, has some helpful advice on how to start living healthy before your bariatric surgery.
Benefits of Getting a Head Start on Lasting Weight Loss
There are three main reasons for making lifestyle changes before bariatric surgery. Read on to learn more about them, and start implementing them today.
Learn Healthy Habits
You may be asked to participate in a doctor-supervised weight-loss program for a few months before surgery. “Many health insurance plans require this as a condition of coverage,” explains Dr. Thatimatla, “and it’s a chance to learn about the lifestyle changes you’ll need to make after your operation.”
Your dietitian can help you understand how you’ll want to meal plan, shop and so much more before and after surgery. You can practice choosing nutritious foods and engaging in more physical activity during your day.
Reduce Surgical Risks
You might need to consume a special diet for the last few weeks before surgery. It could involve reducing carbohydrate intake and drinking only liquids for a couple of days.
“Pre-op diet plans help to shrink the size of the liver and make surgical procedures easier and safer,” Dr. Thatimatla explains.
Potentially Improve Results
Patients who reach their pre-op weight-loss goal before surgery typically see better long-term results. They can lose as much as 7.5% excess body fat a year after surgery compared to those who didn’t meet their pre-op goal weight.
“We find that patients who are the most motivated to do the work before surgery are the most successful long-term,” says Dr. Thatimatla.
Strategies for Pre-Op Success
In the weeks leading up to surgery, you’ll have a compassionate team of health professionals supporting you, including a dietitian and behavioral health specialist. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or discuss challenges with your team.
“Keep your focus on the long-term rewards. Your efforts upfront can help you prepare for a lifetime of better health after surgery,” Dr. Thatimatla advises.
