Hours and Appointments
Updated Office Hours
We have recently made some adjustments to our office hours in response to patient need. As of May 28, 2022, our office is no longer open on Saturdays, as requests for Saturday visits have steadily declined in recent years. Instead, our providers have opened up more weekday morning and afternoon appointments during timeframes when patient need has traditionally outweighed provider availability. These changes will allow our team to provide more responsive, convenient care when patients need it most.
Please note: We will continue to offer periodic weekend clinics for specific purposes during certain seasons. For example, to accommodate families who need school physicals for their children, we will hold some Saturday school-physical clinics over the summer.
Same-Day Appointments
If you are sick or injured and need to be seen the same day, we will do our very best to schedule you for a same-day appointment. These appointments are available for the following:
- Sore throat/cough
- Fever/flu
- Accidents, falls or cuts requiring stitches
- Animal or insect bites
- Acute back or abdominal/pelvic pain
- Allergic reactions
To schedule a same-day appointment, please call our office at 785-830-0100.

Answering Your Frequently Asked Questions
- Who is AdventHealth?
-
AdventHealth is a faith-based, non-profit health care system focused on caring for the whole person — body, mind and spirit. In Kansas, AdventHealth includes:
- AdventHealth Medical Group primary and specialty care, which includes our office and dozens of other primary care and specialty care offices across Johnson, Douglas and Miami counties
- AdventHealth Ottawa (hospital)
- AdventHealth Shawnee Mission (hospital)
- AdventHealth South Overland Park (hospital)
- AdventHealth Lenexa (health campus)
- AdventHealth College Boulevard (health campus)
- AdventHealth Centra Care (urgent care)
AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is the only certified member of MD Anderson Cancer Network®, a program of MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Kansas City. Across the country, AdventHealth includes nearly 50 hospital campuses and hundreds of care sites in almost a dozen states.
- Why did Family Medicine Associates choose to affiliate with AdventHealth?
-
AdventHealth is most closely aligned with the approach to care at Family Medicine Associates (FMA). Providers at FMA have always been dedicated to whole-person care. By joining with AdventHealth, we can now provide better access to mental, emotional and spiritual health resources in the primary care setting.
AdventHealth leadership respects our community in Lawrence and knows it is a great place to extend the organization's healing mission. Providing more care options for patients is beneficial to all who live and work in our community.
- Will you still take my insurance?
-
Our office continues to accept almost all insurance payers that we accepted in the past, except for Medica & WPPS/Provider Care. If you have additional questions about whether our office is in your insurance carrier's network, please contact your carrier.
- Will I have to go to Kansas City if I need hospital care?
-
No, not unless you need highly specialized care that our providers feel cannot be found closer to home. In most cases, the choice of where to go for hospital or specialty care will be a joint decision made by you and your provider, together.
- How do I reach my provider’s nurse?
-
You can contact your physician's or physician assistant’s nurse through the AdventHealth portal (Account.AdventHealth.com) or by phone (785-830-0100). Because we now have an enhanced phone system, please listen carefully when you call, as the automated options have changed. We are experiencing a high call volume during the transition, and we are grateful for your patience as we work hard to answer and return each patient's call.
- How do I request a prescription refill?
-
Our goal is to assist our patients with prescription requests in an efficient and timely manner. To help us provide you with the best care and service, please follow these guidelines:
- Maintenance medication: For refill requests for maintenance medication, please contact your preferred pharmacy.
- New prescriptions: To request a new prescription or a change to an existing prescription, you must first be seen for an appointment with your provider.
- Pain medications: For refill requests for pain medication or other controlled substances — including medication for ADD/ADHD, anxiety, testosterone replacement and more — submit the request by logging into the AdventHealth patient portal (Account.AdventHealth.com) or by calling your provider's nurse. Refills for controlled substances will require an office visit every three (3) months and an annual drug screening.
Prescription refill requests will be addressed Monday through Friday, 8 am to 3 pm. Requests received after 3 pm on Friday will be processed the following week. Requests may take up to two business days to process and will not be addressed on weekends, holidays or after hours.
- Is the practice taking new patients with Medicare?
-
Yes, we are accepting new patients who have Medicare coverage.
- Is the COVID-19 vaccine available at the office? What about booster shots?
-
COVID-19 vaccines are not yet available in our office; we are awaiting our supply from the state of Kansas. When the vaccine, including booster shots, becomes available, we will post an update on this webpage.
- What has changed as a result of the affiliation with AdventHealth?
-
We are honored to be partnering with AdventHealth to provide whole-person care in our communities. Here are a few changes you can expect as we transition:
- New practice name: Our practice name is now AdventHealth Medical Group Primary Care at Lawrence. Watch for this new name on patient communications, including bills.
- Enhanced online check-in system: Using our enhanced online check-in system, you can now more easily pre-register for your appointment and pay your co-pay online.
- New online patient portal: We're upgrading to the AdventHealth patient portal, where you'll be able to message your care team, view lab results, schedule appointments, pay your bill, access health records and more.
- Medicare accepted: We can now accept more insurances/payers than before, including accepting new patients who are covered by Medicare.
- Lab changes: Due to changes to our laboratory setup, we can no longer process lab orders from providers outside our office. Also, please consult with your insurance carrier about which lab-draw locations are covered by your plan.
- What has not changed as a result of the affiliation with AdventHealth?
-
We are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for current and new patients. While some things are changing with the new partnership, here is what you can continue to expect from us:
- Committed to the best care: Our commitment to providing personable, responsive primary care for you and your family is unwavering.
- Same contact info: Our contact information – location, phone and fax – remains the same.
- Familiar faces: You'll see most of the same familiar faces of the providers you know, with very few exceptions.
- Supporting our community: Our team remains committed to supporting the Lawrence community, including partnerships with and sponsorship of schools and community organizations, as we are able.
- Encouraging you to stay up to date: As usual, we will ask you to periodically update some specific patient paperwork to ensure your medical records are kept up to date.
