AdventHealth Heart of Florida in Davenport has opened its newly renovated Cardiac Catheterization (Cath) Lab, featuring advanced technology to help more patients receive life-saving heart care close to home.

More than two dozen community leaders joined hospital executives and team members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the upgraded facility, which enhances the hospital’s ability to diagnose and treat complex heart conditions.

"This investment reflects our continuing and unwavering commitment to providing world-class cardiovascular care close to home. With these advanced capabilities, we can offer patients safer, more precise treatments and improved outcomes," AdventHealth Polk Market President and CEO Tim Clark said. "With this completed renovation, AdventHealth Heart of Florida has now invested more than five million dollars in the last year into our community to provide the best heart care we possibly can.”

AdventHealth Heart of Florida is nationally recognized as an American College of Cardiology (ACC) HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence, a designation awarded to hospitals demonstrating a commitment to comprehensive, high-quality cardiovascular care. It is the only hospital in Polk County to earn this distinction and holds multiple ACC accreditations for Chest Pain, Heart Failure, and Cath Lab expertise.

The renovated Cath Lab plays a critical role in interventional radiology and cardiac catheterization procedures, which provide critical insights into heart function, including the condition of heart muscles, valves, and blood vessels. These procedures are essential for diagnosing heart disease and can also be used to open blocked arteries or valves, restoring healthy blood flow.

It features leading-edge technology, including the Philips Azurion 7 imaging system with integrated intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). This minimally invasive tool uses sound waves to assess blood vessels from the inside, helping physicians detect narrowing or blockages that could compromise circulation.

“Every patient deserves the best chance at a strong, healthy heart and a full life,” said AdventHealth Heart of Florida interim director of cardiology Barb Middleton, RN. “This gives us two state-of-the-art Cath Labs in the hospital with the ability to perform advanced, minimally invasive procedures with greater precision and safety, right here in our community, so patients don’t have to travel far for exceptional heart care."

Data from the Florida Department of Health shows heart disease accounts for about two out of 10 deaths in Florida. It also shows Polk County saw about 149 per 100,000 people die from heart disease, which is higher than the state average of about 136 per 100,000 people.

This is the second of three Cath labs that have been renovated at AdventHealth Heart of Florida to further enhance patient care. The first one opened earlier this year, and there are plans to update a third one.
