(Chatsworth, Ga.) A new year often means new decisions. Some people want to eat better or spend more time in the gym. Others want to spend more time with their family or save more money. These resolutions have one thing in common: living healthier lives. As you consider the changes you will make in 2018, select a few items from this list to become a happier, healthier you.

1. Get an adequate amount of daily sleep and mini mental breaks.

We function best when we are rested, and it is much more than just getting a good nights sleep. Rest refreshes, rejuvenates, regenerates, and rebuilds us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Its important to relax each day, week, and year. Although stress is an inevitable part of our lives, avoiding unnecessary stress is one key way to optimize rest.

2. Create a healthy and pleasant environment for home and work.

Our environment, or the external space around us, can affect how we feel internally. Our sleeping environment affects our rest. Our work and school environments affect our productivity and decision-making abilities. Not only is our larger environment (air and water quality) important to our health, but also our immediate environment (light, sound, aroma, and touch).

3. Add daily activity to your lifestyle.

Activity is the mental and physical movement of your body; a fit mind and a fit body are interconnected. Physical activity is more than just an exercise routine. Regular participation in physical activity is rewarding by giving you a healthier life full of energy and vitality.

4. Improve positivity and diminish negative attitudes.

Even though it may be easy to have a negative outlook on a situation, changing your attitude to a positive one feels better instantaneously. Identification is the first step in changing your outlook. Realizing when you're being negative and grouchy can help you modify those behaviors. Even if your choices are limited, your attitude isn't. Remember, you determine your reality.

5. Improve your diet.

One of the most common perennial New Years resolutions is losing weight. When it comes to weight loss, one of the hardest things to remember is to not expect overnight results. Losing weight the healthy way takes time, and that's completely normal. However, nutrition is much more than weight loss; incorporating healthy foods full of vitamins and nutrients into your diet is essential for optimum health.
