August 25, 2020; HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – AdventHealth Medical Group Ear, Nose and Throat at Hendersonville welcomes board-certified otolaryngologist John P. Pickens, MD, to its team of care providers. Dr. Pickens is thrilled to return to AdventHealth Hendersonville, where he has served previously in clinical and leadership roles.

With more than 35 years of experience as a physician, Dr. Pickens has practiced in his specialty in Western North Carolina since 1994. In addition to otolaryngology, he has training and practice experience in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Otolaryngologists, also known as ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors, treat people with conditions that affect the sinuses, mouth, larynx, throat and other structures of the neck and face. ENT doctors at AdventHealth Hendersonville are experts in diagnosing problems in these areas and personalizing treatment plans for both adults and children. Treatment options may include medications, physical therapy and/or surgical procedures.

“I like to learn about people in addition to the particular problem that’s bringing them to see me,” Dr. Pickens says.

Dr. Pickens began his career as a surgical assistant before deciding to pursue his medical degree. But the medical field has always been important to him, because his father and grandfather were both surgeons.

“What matters most to me is taking care of patients successfully and to the best of my ability, as well as developing the special relationship between patient and surgeon,” Dr. Pickens explains.

A father to three and grandfather to six, Dr. Pickens has been married to his wife, a nurse practitioner specializing in diabetes, for 35 years. In his free time, he enjoys time with his grandchildren, cycling, playing and listing to music, hiking, fly fishing, travel and the occasional home project.
