Mission Control: five years of innovation, resilience, and excellence

Mission Control - Celebrating 5 Years!

ORLANDO, Fla. — Five years after its launch, AdventHealth’s Mission Control command center continues to transform patient care and system operations across Central Florida through innovation, resilience and data-driven precision.

From the start, Mission Control has played a critical role in capacity management, patient flow, and crisis response. The integration of advanced artificial intelligence has allowed the team to optimize bed utilization, improve access to care, and streamline operations.

“We’ve built a proactive system that helps place patients faster and more efficiently,” said Penny Porteous, executive director of Mission Control. “That’s had a direct impact on outcomes.”

Mission Control proved its value during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it coordinated resources, managed surges, and provided real-time updates to senior leadership. It also played a vital role in AdventHealth’s complex transition from Cerner to Epic—one of the largest EMR conversions in its history.

“Our team ensured continuity through both of those major events,” Porteous said. “We stayed focused, connected, and responsive under pressure.”

Beyond emergencies, Mission Control has improved patient outcomes through predictive analytics, reducing hospital stays and readmission risks. It also enhances the patient’s experience by anticipating needs and improving care transitions.

The center supports emergency operations during hurricanes and other crises, providing daily reports, facilitating transfers, and coordinating with state and internal teams.

“This level of coordination has saved lives and prevented care disruptions,” said Porteous.

Early challenges included integrating data systems and building unified communication channels across departments. With strategic planning and training, the team established clear workflows and a shared operational culture.

Looking forward, Mission Control aims to expand AI capabilities and align with systemwide initiatives focused on quality, safety and patient satisfaction.

“We’re leveraging data to guide decisions and anticipate future demands,” Porteous said. “It’s about staying ahead while improving care for every patient.”

A defining moment came when a coordinator helped reroute a patient to the correct location for a time-sensitive procedure. The quick action led to a positive outcome and earned recognition for service excellence.

“That’s what Mission Control is all about—owning challenges and delivering results,” she said.

As AdventHealth continues to grow, Mission Control Command Center serves as a powerful example of how innovation and teamwork can transform health care delivery. With a solid track record of achievements, a forward-looking vision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, Mission Control is well-positioned to continue advancing patient care and emergency response in the years to come.
