Strong Bones for a Stronger Future

When it comes to osteoporosis — a condition that causes bone loss — early detection is key. A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, also called a bone density exam, uses enhanced X-ray technology to measure bone loss. Once it's identified, you can begin treatment that can slow bone loss and prevent breaks or fractures.

A DEXA scan uses two low doses of X-rays to measure how much light passes through the bone. The exam focuses on the lower spine and hip, as people with osteoporosis have a greater risk of breaking these bones, and their condition can predict the likelihood of future breaks.

What To Expect During Your DEXA Scan

How a DEXA Scan Is Performed

No special diet or preparation is required for your DEXA scan.

In the exam room, you’ll be on a padded table with X-ray equipment located underneath and an imaging device above you. The detector will slowly pass over the examined body part to generate images for our technologists. You’ll need to keep still and may be asked to hold your breath for a moment during the scan so we can get the cleared images.

After Your Exam

Your DEXA scan results will be sent to your ordering physician between two and 10 days. If you have an AdventHealth online account, or the AdventHealth app, you may also receive and review your medical records there. If you have any questions about your DEXA scan, our imaging team is happy to help. We want to ensure all your questions are answered so you feel informed and confident.
