Oxygen Therapy for Accelerated Healing
Wounds need oxygen to heal, so among our treatment options is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). You’ll enter a hyperbaric chamber where you'll breathe in 100% oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. HBOT helps treat wounds and accelerates healing by reducing swelling, fighting infection and building new blood vessels, ultimately producing healthy tissue and healing the wound.
- Preparing for HBOT
-
For safety reasons, the only clothing you may wear inside the hyperbaric chamber is a cotton garment, which we will provide.
The following items are not permitted in the chamber during your treatment:
- Alcohol or petroleum-based products
- Flammable materials
- Hearing aids
- Makeup, nail polish, perfume or aftershave
- Metallic objects (such as jewelry, watches and coins)
- Wigs, hairpieces, hairspray and hair oils
Tobacco use will prolong — or even prevent — wound healing due to its effect on the blood vessels. So, you’ll be asked to refrain from smoking or using tobacco products during the entire course of therapy.
Contact lenses may also impact your procedure, so ask your technician beforehand if contact lenses are permitted.
- During Your Oxygen Therapy
-
Pressure will gradually increase once you’re comfortably positioned inside the hyperbaric chamber, and the temperature will rise. When the desired pressure is achieved, the temperature will be adjusted to your comfort level. You may experience fullness in your ears due to the increased pressure. The technician will instruct you in ways to help clear the pressure and relieve any discomfort.
Most HBOT sessions last less than two hours. When the treatment is completed, the chamber will be restored to normal pressure, and the interior of the chamber will become cooler.
- Care Beyond Your Session
-
Your care team will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan. You may be asked to visit our wound center regularly for specialized treatments so that we can document your healing progress. We will also instruct you on caring for your wound at home to protect against further injury.
