As the Program Director of AdventHealth Redmond’s Transitional Year Residency, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our program. We are fortunate to have the benefit of the outstanding faculty and infrastructure provided by AdventHealth Redmond’s successful Internal Medicine Residency and the over fifty-year history of innovative, state-of-the-art care provided by the physicians and staff at Redmond. It is our desire to provide you with a first post-graduate year that is an outstanding launching point for the next steps in your education and career. This Transitional Year Residency is not intended to provide you with a complete post-graduate experience but to provide you with a strong foundation in clinical medicine within a system known for its dedicated, innovative, and compassionate care.

Our affiliations with the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and with Harbin Clinic, Georgia’s oldest and largest physician owned and directed physician group, provides robust, diverse, and exceptionally able faculty dedicated to your educational experience. The faculty at AdventHealth Redmond Graduate Medical Education have a national reputation for excellence and strong relationships with the leaders in their specialties, which place them in a unique position to help you in making the successful move to the next stage in your specialty training.

Further Learning: Didactics, Conferences and Research

Transitional year residents participate in our many learning and networking opportunities, including grand rounds, safety conference discussions, peer-reviewed journal articles and research projects overseen by a faculty member. We also prepare residents for medical exams and dedicate time for them to explore academic conferences.

Our Rotation Sites

Free Clinic of Rome

Free Clinic of Rome is a faith-based, community-supported non-profit whose mission is to serve the Northwest Georgia counties of Floyd, Polk and Chattooga by providing quality health care services to uninsured residents with no access to basic health care.

Harbin Clinic

Harbin Clinic is the largest privately owned, multi-specialty physician group in Georgia, comprised of 240 medical professionals representing 40 different medical specialties and services.

Rome Gastroenterology Associates

Located across from AdventHealth Redmond, Rome Endoscopy Center serves as the teaching facility for outpatient endoscopy and gastrointestinal (GI) intervention.

Northwest Georgia Medical Clinic

Northwest Georgia Medical Clinic trains residents in women’s health, office gynecology care and obstetrics and gynecology.

Diabetes and Endocrine Specialists of Cartersville

Led by Harini Jalagani, MD, residents undergo rigorous training in diagnosing and managing diabetes, thyroid disease and other endocrine and metabolic disorders.

Application Process

For consideration to our Transitional Year Residency program, applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Applicants must be submitted by mid-December. Resident appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applicants must register through the NRMP website in addition to applying through ERAS.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Dean’s Letter
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation (LORs)
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Passing scores on USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 or COMLEX 1 and COMLEX 2

  • Question: What is your accreditation status?

    Answer:

    We are an ACGME-accredited program with initial accreditation effective from July 1, 2017. Our sponsor program is our ACGME Internal Medicine Residency which received accreditation from July 1, 2016.

  • Question: How many residents do you accept each year?

    Answer:

    We accept 13 transitional year residents annually.

  • Question: Where do residents complete clinical training?

    Answer:

    All rotations take place at AdventHealth Redmond and affiliated outpatient sites.

  • Question: What kind of clinic experience is provided?

    Answer:

    Residents participate in an outpatient Internal Medicine clinic for 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Question: What is your faculty-to-resident ratio?

    Answer:

    We maintain a 1:3 core faculty-to-resident ratio, and a 1:1 ratio for electives.

  • Question: How many elective rotations do you assign?

    Answer:

    16 to 20 weeks of elective rotations

  • Question: How many weeks of paid time off (PTO) are allotted?

    Answer:

    Three (3) weeks of paid time off for vacation/sick days are allotted. There is an additional week off for either Christmas or New Year's.

  • Question: Do you have a holiday schedule?

    Answer:

    Yes, each resident receives either Christmas week or New Year's week off.

  • Question: How do you build the resident schedules?

    Answer:

    Each resident's schedule is built with the ACGME FCS and electives that align with their future career path. This is done in collaboration with the resident.

  • Question: How many fundamental clinical skills rotations do you assign?

    Answer:

    24 to 28 weeks of FCS

  • Question: What are the minimum USMLE/COMLEX Step 1 and Step 2 requirements?

    Answer:

    USMLE Step 2 – 230 or Comlex 2 -450

  • Question: Do you accept the J1 visa or sponsor H-1 visa?

    Answer:

    We accommodate J-1 visas.

  • Question: What is the medical school graduation cut off?

    Answer:

    Five (5) years

  • Question: Do you have any Letter of Recommendation (LOR) requirements?

    Answer:

    We require a minimum of three (3) recent LORs.

  • Question: Do you offer Step 3 support?

    Answer:

    Yes, we offer exam preparation subscription. Step 3/ Comlex 3 is required, and the exam fee is reimbursed after passing on the first attempt.

  • Question: Is research required?

    Answer:

    Research is not mandatory, but each resident must complete a case presentation during the year to be presented during Academic Half Day.
