With how busy life gets, we know it can be challenging to find time for your annual well-woman visit. However, prioritizing your health with a trusted gynecologist is one of the best investments you can make in your well-being.
“Our practice of Littleton gynecologists offers a variety of services, including preventive and specialty care in women's reproductive health,” says Hillary Jarnagin, MD, an OB/GYN with AdventHealth Medical Group OB/GYN at Littleton. “We understand that women have limited time for self-care, and we want to meet their needs for preventive health care, family planning, reproductive health, healthy aging from adolescence to young adulthood, menopause and beyond.”
We know that many women wonder what a gynecologist will do during their visit. Keep reading to learn what comprehensive services our gynecologists in Littleton offer.
Breast and Gynecologic Screenings
One of the primary reasons women visit their gynecologist annually is for breast and gynecologic screenings. These exams are designed to monitor your reproductive health, administer appropriate screenings, inquire about needs for family planning and detect early signs of more serious health concerns, such as cervical or breast cancer.
“Our team focuses on making these screenings comfortable and thorough,” Dr. Jarnagin says. “Regular screenings are crucial for catching potential issues earlier, allowing us to address them before they become more serious.”
During your visit, your provider will conduct a pelvic exam to assess the health of your reproductive organs. They may also swab your cervix to screen you for cervical cancer, depending on your age and the last time you were screened.
Our providers follow cervical cancer screening guidelines set by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for patients at average risk for the disease. The guidelines suggest:
- Women aged 21 to 29 should get a Pap test every three years.
- Women aged 30 to 65 have three options for screening: a Pap test and an HPV test together every five years, a Pap test every three years or HPV testing alone every five years.
- After age 65, women can stop cervical cancer screenings if they have never had precancer of the cervix and if they have had at least two normal test results in a row, depending on the type of screening.
While the American Cancer Society no longer recommends clinical breast exams for women at average risk for breast cancer, our providers at AdventHealth Medical Group OB/GYN at Littleton continue to perform them following the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines: every one to three years for women aged 25 to 39 and annually for women 40 and older.
Additionally, your gynecologist will discuss your risk factors for breast cancer, considering your family history and personal health. If appropriate, they will order a mammogram, which is typically recommended beginning at age 40 and continuing annually to age 74, depending on your health.
“Our goal is to relieve the burden on our patients of remembering when and how often to schedule mammograms,” Dr. Jarnagin explains. “During your visit, we’ll make recommendations for you about when to start breast cancer screening and send reminders through the AdventHealth patient portal when you’re due for your next mammogram. You can also schedule your mammogram in the portal.”
Other Health Screenings
Our Littleton gynecologists are here for you well beyond reproductive care. To make things easier, we can act as your primary care provider, conducting general health screenings and services to provide you with the comprehensive care you need. These include:
- Heart-health screenings: We offer routine blood pressure checks and cholesterol testing to assess your cardiovascular health.
- Lifestyle assessment: We’ll discuss healthy habits such as exercise, nutrition and substance use to support your overall wellness.
- Mental and spiritual health: Because your mental and emotional well-being are just as important as your physical health, we ask about your joy, fulfillment and any challenges you may face. If needed, we can connect you with our behavioral health specialist — located right in our office — or refer you to spiritual health resources.
- Vital signs check: This includes monitoring your height, weight and BMI.
“Gynecologists often serve as the primary provider for healthy patients in their 20s, 30s and 40s,” Dr. Jarnagin says. “We’re happy to provide screenings and bloodwork to streamline the number of exams our patients must schedule. If we identify abnormal test results during screening, we’re able to provide referrals to internal medicine or any other specialist as needed.”
Reproductive Health and Family Planning
Whether you’re planning to start a family or are experiencing challenges with fertility, our Littleton gynecologists are here to support you. We offer family planning services like:
Contraception
Our team provides personalized guidance on contraceptive methods to help you find what works best for your lifestyle and needs. From birth control pills and patches to IUDs and implants (long-acting reversible contraception or LARC), we offer a full range of options. Your gynecologist will work with you to understand your goals and preferences to help you make informed decisions about your reproductive health.
Fertility Guidance
For those struggling with infertility, we provide assessments and guidance to identify potential issues, from hormonal imbalances to structural concerns. When necessary, we’ll connect you with specialists for advanced treatment options.
Pre-Pregnancy Planning
We’ll help you prepare for a healthy pregnancy by assessing your overall health and addressing any factors that could impact conception or pregnancy.
“Building a family is deeply personal, and we’re honored to be part of that journey,” Dr. Jarnagin says. “Our role is to provide you with the tools and support you need to achieve your goals.”
Menopause
Every woman experiences menopause differently, and our Littleton OB/GYNs are here to guide you through this life stage with care and expertise.
From managing symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings to addressing health risks associated with lower estrogen levels, we’ll help you navigate this transition with confidence. Treatments may include lifestyle modifications, over-the-counter remedies and hormonal and nonhormonal prescription medicines, depending on your individual needs.
“A lot of women think treatment for perimenopause symptoms has to involve hormones, but that’s not the case,” Dr. Jarnagin says. “If there’s hesitancy around taking estrogen or a medical reason to avoid estrogen use, we’ve still got options that can help.”
Weight-Loss Counseling and Botox
Our care at AdventHealth Medical Group OB/GYN at Littleton goes beyond traditional gynecologic care to provide services that cater to your overall well-being and lifestyle. We offer weight-loss counseling, including the use of GLP-1 injectables for those who qualify.
Additionally, we provide cosmetic Botox treatments — all delivered by experienced professionals who understand the importance of convenience and trust in your care.
“Our goal is to provide services that make our patients’ lives easier while supporting their health and confidence,” Dr. Jarnagin says.
Pediatric Gynecology
For younger patients, we offer gentle, educational care tailored to their developmental stage. Our goal is to create a positive, trusting relationship while providing guidance on puberty, menstruation and age-appropriate topics around sexual health and safety.
“We’re all about creating a safe and supportive environment during what can be an uncomfortable time,” Dr. Jarnagin says. “We want young women to feel empowered as they learn about their health.”
Most young women can wait until 21 to have an internal pelvic exam. However, if a young woman is experiencing issues like heavy bleeding, severe menstrual pain or abnormal vaginal discharge, a pelvic exam may be necessary.
