As we observe Colon Cancer Awareness Month, it is crucial to highlight the significance of early detection and treatment in combating this disease. Colorectal surgeon, Dr. Charles Browning emphasizes that "75% of colon cancers are diagnosed after the development of symptoms, which is frequently an indicator of more advanced disease." This statistic underscores the importance of regular screenings and being vigilant about any changes in our health.
Early-stage colon cancers, when treated with surgery, have a survival rate of more than 90%. However, this rate decreases as the cancer progresses. Dr. Browning explains, "Initial treatment for colorectal cancer is dependent upon the stage at diagnosis. Frequently, early-stage colon cancers are treated with upfront surgery alone. More advanced cancers may require chemotherapy or radiation before or after surgery." This highlights the critical need for early detection and timely intervention.
The message is clear: regular screenings and early detection can save lives. By catching the disease in its early stages, patients have a much higher chance of successful treatment and long-term survival. During Colon Cancer Awareness Month, let us all take a moment to educate ourselves and others about the importance of early detection and the available treatment options.
