ASHEVILLE, N.C., — BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NC, July 7, 2025 – AdventHealth invites the community to learn more about its plan to apply for a Certificate of Need (CON) to add 129 acute care beds to the hospital already approved for construction in Buncombe County. This expansion reflects the voices of the community and AdventHealth’s commitment to delivering more access, more choice, and more whole-person care to Western North Carolina.
The proposed 129 beds will be in addition to the 93 beds already approved by the state for the hospital site located near US 25/70 in Weaverville. The current approved hospital includes labor and delivery rooms with a dedicated C-section operating room, medical/surgical inpatient beds, intensive care unit beds, surgical suites, a full-service emergency department, and advanced imaging and lab services. With 222 beds, the community will have more access to higher-level emergency and specialty care and more choices for how and where to receive this advanced care.
“This hospital is more than a location—it is a vision,” said Brandon Nudd, FACHE, President and CEO for AdventHealth Hendersonville and AdventHealth Polk. “It is a promise to Western North Carolina that more not-for-profit, whole-person care is not only coming but also evolving. These additional beds will allow us to meet the growing needs of our region and deliver the high-acuity, compassionate care our communities deserve.”
The announcement follows the North Carolina Court of Appeals’ decision to uphold the state’s approval of AdventHealth’s original CON for a 67-bed hospital in Buncombe County. That ruling affirms the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ 2022 decision and clears the way for AdventHealth to move forward with its plans to serve Buncombe, Graham, Madison, and Yancey Counties.
“AdventHealth is grateful for the North Carolina Court of Appeals’ decision to uphold the State’s approval of our CON application for a 67-bed hospital in Buncombe County. This ruling also affirms what so many in our community already know: Western North Carolina deserves more access, more choice and more whole-person care,” said Victoria Dunkle, AdventHealth spokesperson.
AdventHealth’s expanded hospital design is rooted in feedback from listening sessions held across the region. The organization continues to invite community members to be part of this journey – through letters of support, participation in listening sessions, and sharing in the vision of a healthier future for all.
