OCALA, Fla., Dr. Edwin Menor of AdventHealth Ocala has reached an exciting milestone by completing 2,000 robotic procedures.

AdventHealth Ocala recently celebrated his impressive accomplishment during a special ceremony. Dr. Menor said it took around five years to reach this goal. He has nearly two decades of extensive experience in advanced, minimally invasive procedures, both robotic and laparoscopic, as well as open repairs. He serves as the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at AdventHealth Ocala.

Dr. Menor performs robotic surgeries using the da Vinci® Surgical System. It has 3D vision that magnifies the surgical field up to 10 times, giving surgeons a more detailed view of operating sites than they can see with their eyes alone.

The da Vinci’s robotic arms and instruments help surgeons work with tissue from angles and positions that can be very difficult to access. More steady than human hands, the arms are controlled by a surgeon at a console next to the patient. And the da Vinci instruments are even more precise than laparoscopic tools, allowing our surgeons to perform complex surgical procedures.

Dr. Menor’s robotic surgeries include, but are not limited to, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, colorectal, general cases, as well as hernias of all types.

“I am very grateful to our amazing team at AdventHealth Ocala for their exceptional work every day in helping to care for our patients and reaching this new milestone,” Dr. Menor said. “I am thankful for the trust these patients have in me to care for them, and it is an honor to be able to serve them and our community.”

AdventHealth Ocala has been named a Center of Excellence for Robotic Surgery and Hernias by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). The process to receive this prestigious designation involves extensive site inspections, self-assessment and independent, external evaluation of a variety of services including consultative services, patient education programs, support groups, and treatment pathways. Because the SRC accredits both the facility and the individual providers who work there, they also conduct in-depth interviews and detailed medical chart reviews to verify that each medical professional provides complete and thorough care. SRC accreditation requirements have also been proven to improve patient outcomes.

According to the Surgical Review Corporation, over the last five years, only 2.4 percent of Dr. Menor’s patients were re-admitted following surgery for any reason, which is lower than both similar sized facilities (3%) and all other facilities (2.7%) with the same Center of Excellence designation as AdventHealth Ocala.

“This fantastic achievement is a testament to the high-quality expertise Dr. Menor has been providing to our patients for years,” said AdventHealth Ocala President and CEO Erika Skula. “We are very fortunate to have him as part of our outstanding medical team, that works so diligently to provide the best whole-person care to Ocala and the surrounding communities.”
