“These patients deserve better. While there is currently no cure for IBD, early, effective treatment can prevent complications and allow patients to lead full, active lives. However, the care required is resource-intensive, involving lifelong treatment, regular imaging, periodic endoscopies and costly medications. A new approach -- dedicated, multidisciplinary IBD specialty clinics -- helps bridge the current care gaps, improving patient outcomes.” – Jennifer Seminerio, MD, Medical Director, AdventHealth IBD Clinic
Nearly 1 in 100 Americans suffers from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a group of disorders that cause chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis the two most common forms. People with IBD face flares of inflammation that not only negatively impact their health and quality of life but also lead to psychological distress, social isolation and economic hardship. Many also encounter diagnosis and treatment delays along with lack of access to specialized care.
In our latest Clinician’s View, Dr. Seminerio shares her personal passion for improving care for patients with IBD and talks about how AdventHealth’s recently established Orlando IBD Clinic is offering a more comprehensive, coordinated, patient-centered approach to diagnosis, treatment and long-term disease management while also advancing research, advocacy and patient education initiatives.
