Our Thoracic Course, on April 11-12, 2019, is an advanced course in utilizing robotic surgery in thoracic procedures, namely lobectomies and thymectomies. Surgeons will build upon their previous experience with robotic surgery, focusing on pulmonary treatments.

World-Renowned Faculty

The course is led by two academic thoracic surgeons with extensive experience in robotic surgery.

Luis Herrera, MD serves as the Section Head at the Division of Thoracic Surgery UF Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health and is an Affiliate Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Florida’s School of Medicine.

Jacques Fontaine, MD, FACS, FRCS(c) serves as the Section Head for the Mesothelioma Treatment and Research Center, the Program Director for the Robotic Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Program at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, and is an Associate Professor for the Department of Oncologic Sciences at the University of South Florida.

Course Overview

The program provides a detailed review of robotic thoracic procedures with hands-on instructions. Throughout the course, physicians will get a chance to put their learnings to the test, first through a dry-lab, and then through a cadaveric laboratory. They will have the opportunity to practice port placement and robotic docking, as well as the actual procedures. There will also be a discussion segment during which participants are encouraged to direct their questions to the two course directors.

After this course, surgeons should feel even more comfortable operating surgical robots. They will know how to approach robotic lobectomies, and they will gain the psychomotor skills necessary to perform complex surgical movements with the robotic apparatus. Outside of the operating room, they will also understand how to maintain and troubleshoot robotic equipment, and identify the tips and pitfalls of starting a robotics program.

The two-day schedule will feature a variety of events to explore the many applications of robotics in thoracic procedures, building upon the already existing surgical robotics knowledge of the attending surgeons. All of these sessions will be seamlessly integrated with networking breaks, delicious breakfast and lunch options for everyone, in the worry-free, comfortable environment of the Nicholson Center.
