Our physicians are highly experienced in the treatment of wounds and open sores that are located on the feet, legs and toes, including those that are infected, slow to heal or continue to recur. Such ulcers are caused by poor blood circulation that is often tied to diabetes, atherosclerosis, kidney failure, heart disease or inflammatory disorders such as lupus and scleroderma. These ulcers can be classified under three headings: venous stasis ulcers, arterial/ischemic ulcers and neurotrophic/diabetic ulcers. Treatment of more complex wounds may require referral to a wound care specialist or podiatrist and may entail the use of antibiotics and other medications, compression therapy, prosthetics, debriding, specialized dressings and synthetic skin substitutes along with close monitoring for signs of a new infection.
