Nerve root damage (also known as acute radiculopathy) is a condition in which pressure is put on nerve roots located around the vertebrae in the spine. Since many nerve roots branch off of the spinal cord and go between each individual vertebrae, trauma or damage to the vertebrae can result in nerve compression that causes damage to the nerve root. Common symptoms of nerve root damage include arm or leg weakness, numbness in a foot or leg, sharp arm or shoulder pain, pain that worsens with movement of the neck/turning of the head and a “pins and needles” sensation in the arm. Treatment can include the use of over-the-counter NSAIDs and prescribed medications, physical therapy and proper weight management. In cases of cervical radiculopathy, a soft neck collar may also be employed.
