A megaureter refers to a condition in which one of the ureters that brings urine from the kidneys to the bladder is abnormally wide and unable to function properly. A ureterocele is a ballooning at the end of the ureter within the bladder. This ballooning and/or a narrowing of the location where the ureter meets the bladder can cause the megaureter to occur. Some megaureters are discovered prior to a child’s birth via prenatal ultrasound, while others are diagnosed in kids who’ve experienced one or more urinary tract infections. Medical treatment of this condition is necessary to avoid continued urinary tract infections and possible damage to the kidneys. This treatment may include oral antibiotics as well as surgical solutions.
