Dr. Swann offers leading-edge hip solutions, including periacetabular osteotomy, hip arthroscopy, hip dysplasia surgery and minimally invasive hip resurfacing and hip replacement. His fellowship training helps ensure each patient receives the best care to keep their natural hip longer and lead an active life.
One of these procedures, periacetabular osteotomy surgery, is performed to correct hip dysplasia by making small surgical incisions around the socket and hip joint to reorient the pelvis to reduce wear and tear. This minimally invasive form of hip preservation can usually help patients avoid hip replacement surgery.
Dr. Swann is one of two surgeons in the country to offer periacetabular osteotomy with an arthroscopic technique. The surgical difference is that the hip is accessed from outside of the outer layer under direct visualization, which results in less damage to the hip than with traditional techniques.
Hip replacement surgery replaces a worn or damaged hip joint with a metal ball and socket prosthesis. The goal is to remove the parts of the hip that are causing pain and restore range of motion.
Hip resurfacing or replacement surgery may be needed after the hip joint develops arthritis, has a fracture or if other conservative pain treatments haven’t been successful. Dr. Swann performs hip replacement and resurfacing through minimally invasive and muscle-sparing techniques for the best outcomes.
A partial knee replacement surgery involves only resurfacing the part of the knee that’s affected by arthritis, which is either the medial, lateral or patella-femoral part of the knee. By resurfacing only part of the knee, Dr. Swann can restore its natural motion and eliminate pain while keeping all the ligaments intact.
If you’re a candidate for partial knee replacement, you can expect a minimally invasive procedure where you can go home the same day. Most patients regain their full range of motion and are pain-free within two weeks of the procedure.
A total knee replacement involves replacing the worn or damaged bone and cartilage sections of the entire knee. To ease recovery and minimize pain, Dr. Swann takes two innovative approaches with this procedure: balancing the knee during surgery and safe pain management.
Kinetic Balancing During Surgery
Dr. Swann kinetically balances the knee during surgery to mimic the patient’s natural bone shape. Historically, surgeons would make a flat incision in the bone to accommodate the artificial joint. However, altering the bone’s shape meant patients had to re-learn how to walk. In making balanced bone incisions, Dr. Swann can replace only the affected areas and keep everything else natural.
Safe Pain Management Techniques
Dr. Swann places a long-acting pump in the thigh to release medication that keeps the knee completely numb for three days. He also gives medication with no narcotic pathway. After a few days, the pump is removed by a nurse, and the patient switches to over-the-counter pain medications. A retroactive study of over 500 of Dr. Swann’s joint replacement procedures showed that 73% of his patients took less than two narcotic pills during their recovery.
Total knee replacement is one of the most successful procedures in medicine. In time, however, it may need to be revised for reasons like:
- Implant loosening: metal parts loosening from bone or excessive plastic wear
- Infection: a bacteria or fungus adheres to the metal implant
- Fractures: a bone breaks due to a fall or an accident
- Improper previous replacement surgery: the new knee may have never felt right
In these cases, it’s best to seek the care of a fellowship-trained total joint surgeon like Dr. Swann to have the knee assessed. In a revision knee replacement procedure, Dr. Swann can remove the old components, place new specialized implants and re-balance the knee.
