“This program is part of a larger promise to provide comprehensive women’s care at every stage of life, right here in the community.”
Women in West Orange County now have expanded access to specialized fibroid care close to home with the launch of the AdventHealth Comprehensive Fibroid Program at AdventHealth Winter Garden.
Designed to support women through every step of their care journey, the program brings together experts across gynecology, interventional radiology, hematology and pharmacy to provide personalized treatment options tailored to each patient’s needs and goals.
The launch marks another step in AdventHealth Winter Garden’s broader commitment to expanding women’s health services for one of Florida’s fastest-growing communities.
“Fibroids can affect far more than physical health. They can impact a woman’s daily life, energy, comfort and peace of mind,” said Dr. Steven McCarus, OB-GYN surgeon and Advanced GYN Surgery Medical Director at AdventHealth Winter Garden. “Our goal is to provide compassionate, personalized care that helps women feel heard, supported and confident in their treatment options while making it easier to access that care close to home.”
Fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus and can cause symptoms including heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, fatigue and fertility challenges. While common, many women delay seeking care or may not realize how many treatment options are available.
The Comprehensive Fibroid Program offers a coordinated approach that includes medical management, minimally invasive procedures and surgical care, helping women better understand their options and choose a treatment path that aligns with their health needs and lifestyle.
Dr. Donald J. Perry, interventional radiologist at AdventHealth Winter Garden, said having multiple specialties working together allows patients to receive more individualized care.
“Every woman’s experience with fibroids is different,” Perry said. “By bringing interventional radiology into the program, we can offer minimally invasive treatment options that may help reduce recovery time, preserve quality of life and give patients more choices in their care.”
The program’s multidisciplinary model also includes hematology support, recognizing that fibroids can sometimes contribute to anemia and other blood-related complications.
“Many women don’t immediately connect symptoms like fatigue or anemia to fibroids,” said Dr. Mazen Zaarour, hematologist at AdventHealth Winter Garden. “Having hematology involved as part of the care team helps us look at the full picture of a patient’s health and support her overall well-being throughout treatment.”
In addition to procedural and surgical options, the program also incorporates medication management and non-surgical treatment approaches.
“Not every patient’s fibroid journey looks the same,” said Hardy Wong, retail pharmacy manager at AdventHealth Winter Garden. “Having medical and non-surgical options as part of the program helps us create care plans that are personalized, supportive and designed around what matters most to each woman.”
The Winter Garden program builds on AdventHealth’s established fibroid care offerings at AdventHealth Celebration and AdventHealth Winter Park while expanding access for women in West Orange County and the surrounding region.
The launch also reflects AdventHealth Winter Garden’s growing investment in women’s services as the hospital prepares to open its labor and delivery unit later this summer, helping more families access connected care close to home.
“As Winter Garden continues to grow, so do the needs of the women and families who call this community home,” McCarus said. “This program is part of a larger promise to provide comprehensive women’s care at every stage of life right here in the community.”
