NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., September 5, 2019 – On Aug. 21, approximately 65 health academy students from New Smyrna Beach High School toured AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach, the teenagers’ first step towards internships and job shadowing opportunities.
The students toured a variety of departments at AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach including the ER, medical-surgical nursing unit, laboratory, and the cardiac catheterization lab.
The tour gave students a unique insight into the hospital setting, as they met with different healthcare professionals and learned about the different career opportunities available within the healthcare industry.
This semester, the students will interact and assist employees with patients in the following departments: emergency department, oncology, cardiovascular/pulmonary, orthopedics, rehab and physical therapy.
Throughout the semester, each AdventHealth hospital in Volusia County will offer a similar experience for local students. This is part of AdventHealth’s $2 million partnership with Volusia County Schools that strives to address three key issues: career development in the healthcare industry; student-athlete health; and chronic absenteeism. As part of the historic agreement, AdventHealth has committed to expand not only the care available to students and athletes, but to also develop and enhance career opportunities through the district’s six high school healthcare academies and nine high school and middle school health programs.
