Foundation Awards $25,000 in Community Grants

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., August 2, 2019 – On July 30, the AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach Foundation awarded local community groups with $25,000 in grants during a special luncheon ceremony at the AdventHealth Medical Park in New Smyrna Beach.

The Atlantic Center for the Arts received $5,000 to fund its “Healthy Minds, Healthy Hearts” art and wellness program at New Smyrna Beach High School.

Burns Science and Technology Charter School received $2,500 to supply its new community gym with sports equipment.

The Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia received $4,000 to support expansion of their 5-2-1-0 health initiative in Southeast Volusia. The 5-2-1-0 health initiative started in Maine to combat rising rates of childhood obesity. The program encourages kids to have five or more fruits and vegetables, two hours or less of screen time, one or more hours of physical activity and zero sugary drinks a day.

Hope Reins, Inc. received $5,000 to fund its therapeutic riding and other equine-assisted activities and therapies program to support physical, cognitive and emotional wellbeing in people with disabilities.

Read-Pattillo Elementary School received $3,500 to support the continuation of their “Mission Nutrition Program,” a year-long plan for activities to educate parents and students about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle by providing a variety of events throughout the year.

New Smyrna Beach High School received $5,000 for a continuation of its “Cudas Choose Kindness” school-wide program that strives to spread positivity and kindness throughout the campus, making it a safe and inclusive place for all students through a variety of activities all year.

The AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach Foundation has undertaken an initiative to improve the health of the community through a grants program. Each year, the hospital’s foundation provides grants to organizations dedicated to improving the health of the community with an emphasis on three crucial areas: mental health, cardiac health or obesity issues.
