Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Visits University High School Students

ORANGE CITY, Fla., June 7, 2016 On May 24, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial CEO Rob Deininger visited University High School in Orange City to speak with nearly 30 sophomore and junior students interested in pursuing careers in the healthcare field, including nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, medical research, radiology, surgery, nutrition and sports medicine.

Deininger shared the Volusia County health rankings with the students and explained our community's need for improvement.

You have the power to make the change, he said. You are our future, and you can make the choice between chips and a soda, and you can influence and shape our communities as you enter the workforce.

Deininger offered his insight into the ever-evolving field of healthcare, explaining how advancements in technology has shaped the field, along with the need for security and patient safety.

One student asked Deininger how he became a CEO for the 175-bed hospital in Orange City.

Prior to joining Florida Hospital, I spent 13 years as a commercial airline pilot for various airlines. After logging more than 8,500 hours of flight time, I was interested in making more of an impact on peoples lives and in our communities and began working for Florida Hospital in 2008, he said. In aviation, there are a lot of standard processes and procedures in place to ensure everyone has a safe flight and an enjoyable experience. Some of the basic framework of those processes gives me a unique insight in the operations we manage at the hospital as we work to deliver safe and reliable healthcare.

Perry Revelett, University High School head athlete trainer, gave Deininger a tour of the Orange City school for the nearly 3,000 students. They visited the schools engineering department to watch students make robots and learned they are third in the state championship. Additionally, they stopped by the culinary arts department and learned they have a full catering program.
