CELEBRATION, Fla. — ABC News has named a groundbreaking remote robotic surgery led by Dr. Vipul Patel, medical director of the Global Robotics Institute at AdventHealth Celebration, one of the top medical breakthroughs of 2025, recognizing its potential to expand access to specialized surgical care worldwide for patients who otherwise may not have access.
In June, Dr. Patel performed a robotic prostatectomy on a patient in Angola while operating from the Nicholson Center in Celebration, nearly 7,000 miles away, as part of the first FDA-approved human clinical trial of U.S.-based transcontinental robotic telesurgery. The procedure marked the longest-distance telesurgery ever completed and demonstrated how innovation can help bridge long-standing gaps in access to care for patients in rural and underserved communities, bringing specialized surgery closer to home and family support.
“This first-of-its-kind FDA-approved clinical trial for U.S.-based transcontinental robotic telesurgery is a stunning breakthrough not just technologically but in advancing global health equity,” said Patel. “It marks a critical step toward delivering high-quality surgical care to remote rural and underserved communities that have long lacked access. This is more than innovation. It is a humanitarian leap forward.”
Later in the year, Dr. Patel reached another milestone by completing his 20,000th robotic-assisted prostatectomy, the most of any surgeon worldwide. Throughout his work, he has emphasized early detection, patient education and whole-person care as central to providing care that leads to better healing and peace of mind for those facing prostate cancer.
Together, these moments reflect how AdventHealth is using innovation with purpose to extend the healing ministry of Christ, helping more people feel whole — no matter where they live or how far care once felt out of reach.
