DAVENPORT, FL (July 2, 2018) Foot and Ankle Specialist Narmo Ortiz, DPM, doesn’t like to rest on his laurels. That is one reason he recently completed a Fellowship in External Fixation, Muscle Flaps, Microscopic Nerve Repair, and Autologous Therapies at the Chicago Foot & Ankle Deformity Correction Center.

Dr. Ortiz said that these advanced procedures can help save a leg or foot in danger of being amputated due to either trauma or an unhealed wound or infection.

“There are so many uses for these procedures,’’ Dr. Ortiz said. “They can help with limb salvage for a diabetic person, for someone with a foot and ankle deformity and for restoration of movement in a foot and leg as well. It gives hope to someone who is looking at an amputation or has some foot, ankle or leg nerve damage that needs to be repaired.”

The delicate nerve procedure can also help some who suffer from chronic pain either by using part of an undamaged nerve or a nerve implant to repair the damaged nerve.

“What I do is a nerve bypass procedure. I can take another piece of nerve and bypass the damaged nerve and once that replaced nerve starts working the patient should be pain free. It is amazing how this procedure can help people who have chronic pain and have not been able to find any relief,’’ Dr. Ortiz said.

He said the nerve procedure helps the patient heal faster especially in areas heavily damaged by trauma, previous surgeries, or uncontrolled diabetes where a wound has become infected and there has been nerve and bone damage.

Dr. Ortiz said the four month fellowship taught him the new procedures and opened up several avenues for treatment for patients with foot and ankle injuries.

“This is something that I think the community will benefit from and I wanted to be one of the first ones in the area to offer this,’’ Dr. Ortiz said.

Dr. Ortiz is currently accepting new patients. To schedule an appointment, call Call863-422-2356 or visit our web site at www.HeartOfFloridaPhysicianGroup.com. Dr. Ortiz is a member of the medical staff at the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center.
