DELTONA, Fla. – At Daytona State College’s Deltona campus, construction is underway on a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary classroom and lab facility to teach the next generation of nursing and sonography professionals, as well as programs related to machining and manufacturing industries.
In a recent interview with Deltona TV, AdventHealth leaders say the new facility will help support the increased demand in the nursing field within Volusia County’s largest city.
“It’s going to be so wonderful. There currently isn’t a nursing program in West Volusia and this is something that has been lacking in the Volusia County area,” said Michele Goeb-Burkett, senior vice president and chief nursing officer for AdventHealth operations in Flagler, Lake and Volusia counties. “With our two hospitals in West Volusia, this new building on Daytona State College’s Deltona campus will be a tremendous asset. The aspiring nurses will be able to do their clinicals here at AdventHealth and have their school close by.”
Nina Pradis, now a nurse in the emergency department at AdventHealth Fish Memorial in Orange City, began as a nursing tech while working to earn her degree from Daytona State College. She completed the program at the college’s Daytona Beach campus and says this expansion will help alleviate travel concerns for future students who live in West Volusia, making the transition from the classroom to the bedside easier.
“While I was a student, AdventHealth provided me with resources to earn my nursing degree and helped me practice my skills here until I graduated,” Pradis said. “When I became a new nurse at AdventHealth, I transitioned into a nurse residency program where I felt fully prepared.”
AdventHealth and Daytona State College have had a longstanding relationship to support the critical need for additional frontline health care professionals, including a Nurse Residency Program to bridge the gap between nursing school and clinical practice for Daytona State graduates. AdventHealth also serves on the College’s nursing advisory board, provides student scholarships, as well as tuition assistance for team members attending Daytona State College. Recently, AdventHealth created an $900,000 endowed fund at Daytona State College to help bolster academic performance and better prepare future nurses.
Daytona State College’s new building in Deltona is set to open in 2024.
