“Every day, I find inspiration in the people around me. Listening to their stories, their struggles, and their triumphs fuels my passion for my work. It's these personal connections that remind me why I chose this path.”
Elizabeth “Liz” Marin-Rodriguez is the Manager of Spiritual Care for AdventHealth Shawnee Mission and the recipient of the Angel Award. This award, which was based on 2024 nominations, acknowledges significant contributions to the advancement of the AdventHealth mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ.
“To me, an angel is a messenger who carries a special mission to help others,” said Marin-Rodriguez. “Choosing AdventHealth was an easy decision because, in many ways, AdventHealth chose me first. The people, the mission, and the culture resonated with me deeply. I feel a strong connection to the healing ministry of Jesus Christ that is alive and well at AdventHealth.”
One thing people might not know about Marin-Rodriguez is that she admits she used to get herself into trouble often because of her adventurous spirit. It is a trait that has led her to many exciting and sometimes risky experiences, but it has also taught her valuable lessons.
A major turning point in her life came during a mission trip when she had to preach for the first time, which came as a surprise to the then freshman biology major at Southwestern Adventist University.
“At that moment, I didn't realize where this watershed experience would lead me, but it marked the beginning of a new journey that eventually led me to become a chaplain,” she said.
In addition, the Angel Award recognizes outstanding leadership in specific mission-related achievements, projects, and programs as well as overall spiritual leadership. She credits her team with making her the leader she is today.
“They believe in what I have to offer, even when I doubt myself,” she said. “Their constant encouragement, constructive feedback, and support have helped me become the best team member I can be.”
As a person, Marin-Rodriguez says her grandfather played a key role in her upbringing.
"Papa Abe’ has been a significant inspiration in my life. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support have shaped me into the person I am today.”
Marin-Rodriguez is celebrated at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission for her compassion, leadership and dedication. She sees people as individuals, listens intently, advocates fiercely and supports her team both professionally and personally. Her impact is profound, reflected in her top leader engagement score in the biannual employee satisfaction survey. Her selfless leadership and commitment to service make her a true angel, deserving of this award.
Marin-Rodriguez's love for AdventHealth and her work comes in all shapes and sizes. She reflected on one of the best days she has had at work: the day she got to observe an open-heart surgery.
“For years, this had been on my bucket list, and I finally had the opportunity to join one of the most amazing and hospitable surgical teams at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission,” she said. “The team made me feel welcome inside the operating room and generously shared their knowledge with me. It was a meaningful and spiritual experience that I will never forget.”
