CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — When Paul Spieker received his cancer diagnosis, the road to treatment was anything but straightforward.
After several months of misdiagnoses at other hospitals, Spieker was diagnosed with Stage IV prostate cancer in December at AdventHealth Littleton.
Within weeks, he underwent prostate surgery and began treatment in January at AdventHealth Porter.
For Spieker, a Larkspur resident, receiving care came with challenges beyond the diagnosis itself.
Each appointment required leaving home up to 90 minutes early and navigating traffic on Interstate 25.
He traveled to appointments two to three times each month.
"It depended on the time of day," Spieker said. "But it was always a long trip."
That changed when the Schrader Family Cancer Center at AdventHealth Castle Rock opened in January.
Now receiving care closer to home, Spieker has reclaimed hours that were once spent commuting.
"It saves me an hour to an hour and a half," he said. "And I can avoid I-25."
While the time savings may seem practical, the impact has been personal.
Less time on the road means more energy and a smoother experience during treatment.
Inside the new center, Spieker has also noticed design features that enhance comfort and privacy.
He described the facility as modern, with infusion spaces separated by partial walls that provide patients with a greater sense of personal space.
The waiting area is open and spacious, creating a calmer environment.
At this stage of his treatment, Spieker said convenience and accessibility are more than amenities — they are essential.
"It's very important," he said. "It adds an important service without needing to travel to Denver."
Despite the change in location, one thing has remained consistent: the quality of care.
Spieker praised the teams at both AdventHealth Porter and AdventHealth Castle Rock, saying he has received excellent care throughout his cancer journey.
For others who now have access to care closer to home, his message is simple: "Give the Schrader Cancer Center an opportunity to display their competence and professionalism."
