“Emergencies aren’t scheduled, and chaos doesn’t ask for permission.”
Minneola, Fla. — When medical emergencies strike, patients need care teams who can act quickly, seamlessly and with confidence. That’s why AdventHealth prioritizes training that brings hospital care teams and EMS crews together, helping ensure patients receive timely, whole-person care.
During a high-fidelity emergency simulation —an immersive training experience that replicates real‑world emergencies in a hospital setting— nurses, physicians and first responders at AdventHealth Minneola put their skills to the test. The exercise included in two high-risk scenarios: caring for a child after an accidental medication overdose and resuscitating a patient with a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), a specialized heart pump that adds complexity to emergency care.
“Emergencies aren’t scheduled, and chaos doesn’t ask for permission,” said Dr. Jermaine Deacon, assistant emergency medical director at AdventHealth Minneola. “Training alongside our EMS partners allows us to identify challenges, strengthen communication and ensure patients receive seamless care.”
The emphasis on preparedness resonated with Kevin Alfaro, an ER nurse at AdventHealth Minneola.
“Hands-on simulations are everything for us in the ER,” said Alfaro. “Knowledge is power, but being able to apply it in the moment is what really matters. These scenarios build muscle memory, so when a high-risk case comes in, we’re not hesitating, we’re acting.”
High-fidelity simulations allow care teams to work through the complexities of emergency situations—from patient flow and equipment access to the handoff between EMS crews and hospital staff. Practicing across disciplines in a live clinical environment strengthens coordination and uncovers workflow challenges before patients are involved.
“We have to practice the way we intend to perform,” said Dr. Deacon. “These experiences stick with you, and they help ensure our teams are ready no matter what walks through the door.”
This exercise marked a milestone for the hospital. It was the first simulation of its kind held at the new AdventHealth Minneola facility and the first conducted in partnership with Lake County Fire Rescue since the hospital opened.
That partnership is a key part of the training’s success. First responders are often the first point of medical care for patients, making decisions that directly affect survival and recovery long before arriving at the hospital. The handoff between EMS crews and emergency department staff is a critical moment, where clear communication can make all the difference.
“Time is everything,” said Alejandra Smart, a Lake County EMS paramedic field training officer. “Strong communication and coordination between EMS and the emergency department allows us to move and act as one team. When we’re aligned, patients receive better treatment and have better outcomes.”
Alignment behind the scenes translates directly to the patient experience—especially in high-pressure moments when clear communication and teamwork are essential.
“Our community depends on us to be ready at all times,” said Alfaro. “When someone comes in on their worst day, they deserve a team that’s prepared, confident and ready to act.”
Exercises like this reflect an ongoing commitment to preparation—so when emergencies happen, teams can respond with skill, coordination and compassion.
