DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Caring for kidney disease often requires ongoing follow-up, coordination and a care team patients can rely on over time. To support that continuity, Dr. Poemlarp Mekraksakit, a board-certified nephrologist, has joined AdventHealth Medical Group and will care for patients at AdventHealth Daytona Beach, expanding the hospital’s kidney care team.

AdventHealth Medical Group is a network of nearly 500 physicians and advanced practice providers across Flagler, Lake, St. Johns and Volusia counties. Representing 30 specialties, the group delivers more than one million patient visits each year, connecting people to specialty care within their community and across the region.

As a nephrologist, Mekraksakit works with patients managing a range of kidney-related conditions, including kidney injury, high blood pressure, kidney stones, and advanced kidney disease. He also cares for patients who need dialysis and has experience with home dialysis options, which can offer greater flexibility for some individuals.

Kidney conditions often require long-term management rather than one-time treatment. Regular monitoring and consistent communication with a specialist can play an important role in helping patients maintain their health and daily routines.

“Our community continues to grow and age, and kidney disease often overlaps with other chronic conditions,” said Dr. David Sinclair, president and CEO of AdventHealth Daytona Beach. “By adding another nephrologist to our care team, we’re helping ensure patients can continue receiving coordinated, attentive care close to home.”

Volusia County has a higher-than-average median age, with more than one in four residents age 65 or older, according to regional health data. Older adults are more likely to need ongoing specialty care for conditions that affect kidney health, making access and continuity especially important.

Mekraksakit said his approach centers on clear communication and steady support.

“Kidney care is very personal,” he said. “When people understand what’s happening and what their options are, it gives them confidence and a sense of control.”

He earned his medical degree in Thailand, completed advanced training in internal medicine in Lubbock, Texas, and went on to specialize in kidney care at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he also helped train future physicians and contributed to research focused on complex kidney diseases.

Mekraksakit is now seeing patients at:
