SEBRING, Fla. In collaboration with AdventHealth, the Highlands County Commission recently proclaimed February as American Heart Month in Highlands County. The proclamation aligns with a nationwide effort to raise awareness about heart disease, prevention, early detection, the importance of health lifestyles, and support for those impacted by the disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death across the United States and Florida. According to research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, adults in rural areas are dying at a rate about 1.5 times higher than those living in urban areas. Florida Department of Health data shows heart disease-related deaths in Highlands County are higher than the state average at 147 out of 100,000 people.

Early detection through regular check-ups and timely follow-up care is proven to save lives, empowering individuals to take charge of their health and partner with their care providers.

“Heart health is something we can’t afford to overlook. Taking time for a simple checkup can reveal concerns long before symptoms may appear,” said Dr. Deepti Bhandare, chair of cardiology at AdventHealth Sebring. “We encourage everyone to be proactive about their well-being. Early detection can mean you have more time, more options and more peace of mind. Our expert team of cardiologists will be with you every step of the way, offering compassionate, whole-person heart care close to where you live, so you and your loved ones can live healthier, longer lives.”

As part of the proclamation, residents are encouraged to learn about the signs and risks of heart disease, talk with their health care providers about screening, and to support friends and family who are seeking follow-up care. Education and awareness also play a critical role in reducing the risk of heart disease through healthy habits such as proper nutrition, physical activity, routine medical care and stress management.
