AdventHealth Fish Memorial named among nation’s top hospitals for quality

Designation highlights quality and safety of care for West Volusia families

ORANGE CITY, Fla. A national review of hospital quality ranks AdventHealth Fish Memorial among the top hospitals in the United States, a designation that reflects patient safety and outcomes for people receiving care in West Volusia.

The Orange City hospital was recognized by Vizient Inc., a health care performance improvement company that evaluates patient outcomes across most U.S. hospitals. Only 117 of the 1,220 hospitals reviewed nationwide earned the distinction.

AdventHealth Fish Memorial was recognized by Vizient Inc., a health care performance improvement company that evaluates patient outcomes across most U.S. hospitals. Only 117 of the 1,220 hospitals reviewed nationwide earned the distinction.

The recognition comes through Vizient’s Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Ranking, which identifies hospitals that demonstrate strong results across multiple measures of care, including safety and effectiveness. Hospital leaders say the ranking offers reassurance for families who depend on local care during urgent and uncertain moments.

“For families in West Volusia, this recognition reflects care that is dependable when it matters most,” said Eric Lunde, president and CEO of AdventHealth Fish Memorial. “It points to strong outcomes, careful attention to safety and teams who show up every day focused on the people in front of them.”

Vizient’s rankings are based on a review of real-world data, drawing from patient safety records, survival rates, effectiveness of treatment and patient experience. The analysis looks at performance over time, rather than a single reporting period.

“Quality shows up in the details patients may never see,” said Dr. Stephen Knych, chief medical officer at AdventHealth Fish Memorial. “It’s reflected in clear communication, safer care and support that stays with patients from admission through recovery.”

This ranking also builds on other recent milestones for the hospital.

The Vizient recognition adds to a series of third-party measures pointing to sustained quality at the hospital. AdventHealth Fish Memorial is the only hospital in Volusia County to earn a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which evaluates hospital quality and patient experience nationwide. The hospital has also received 21 consecutive “A” grades for safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit focused on preventing medical harm.

Hospital leaders say those results reflect long-term investment in caregivers, systems and processes designed to reduce risk and support better recovery.

“Results like this grow out of long-term commitment,” Lunde said. “They reflect the people who work here, the systems we create and the responsibility we carry for the health of our neighbors.”

This year’s Vizient Quality and Accountability Study grouped participating hospitals into seven cohorts and evaluated performance across six areas: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness and variation in care. The study draws from the Vizient Clinical Data Base, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network. The recognition reflects work completed between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025.

“We extend our sincere congratulations to this year’s top-performing hospitals recognized in the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study,” said David Levine, chief medical officer, Vizient. “These organizations have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care. Their performance reflects the highest standards in clinical quality and operational excellence, and we are proud to honor their achievements.”

For West Volusia residents, hospital leaders say the ranking reinforces the role a local hospital plays in the stability and well-being of the community.

“For the community, the real value is confidence,” Lunde said. “When someone needs care, they can trust it’s available here, delivered with attention and consistency.”
